SCRIPT

You’ll hear 6 people talking about men and fashion. Match what you hear from each speaker 1-6 with the statements marked A-G. Use letters once only. There is an extra statement you don’t need to use. You’ll hear the recording twice. Fill the boxes in the table with your answers.

Now we are ready to start.

Speaker 1 (m)

Men never get bored with wearing the same clothes. We are much lazier than women and don't want to worry about putting together a different outfit every morning. Once we find a style we like and feel comfortable in, we stick with it unless our body shape changes. I have been wearing the same lace-up shoes for more than ten years and I've got over a hundred shirts in the same style. It would never cross my mind to wear anything else.
Speaker 2 (m)

I think fashion is strictly for women and boys. Most men have found a style by their late twenties or early thirties. I was a slavish follower of fashion in the 1970s and 1980s. Now, I care passionately about clothes, but I don't care about fashion. I like to look good and I love the feel of quality fabrics, but I have no interest in what someone in Milan says I should buy, or whether I'm wearing this season's or last season's clothes.
Speaker 3 (m)

When it comes to shopping for clothes, I think it's a question of self-confidence. I think men have less than women. They need the influence of friends and magazines when they are deciding what to buy. And they need to be sure that they feel totally comfortable in something before they part with their money. They worry about the whole business.
Speaker 4 (m)

Men's fashions change very little from season to season, compared with women’s. The only variations are in the detail, such as the number of buttons on the suit or the width of the lapel, which most men wouldn't notice. Men want to look reasonably good, but fashion isn’t such a big thing for men’s clothes as it is for women’s clothes.
Speaker 5 (m)

Men don't shop for clothes as regularly as women, and when they do, they always go back to the same two or three shops. Most men just don't like the process of shopping. After 15 minutes of going aimlessly from one shop to another, they get emotionally, physically and psychologically exhausted. But I know that one shop has tops that suit me, I always go to another shop for a new suit and I like the cut of certain jeans. So I always go to the same shops because I know I can find what I want there.
Speaker 6 (m)

Women have different priorities to men when it comes to appearance. Insecurity drives women to look for comfort in fashion, because they are much more concerned than men about other people’s opinions of what they’re wearing. This isn’t the case for men. I guess that’s why, according to market research, sales of men’s clothes are than half those of women’s, and there is only one men's clothes store to every four women's shops.
You have 15 seconds to complete the task. (Pause 15 seconds.)

Now you will hear the text again. (Repeat.)

This is the end of the task. You now have 15 seconds to check your answers.
Questions 7-15
You will hear a conversation about a survey. Decide which of the statements (7-15) are true according to the text (A), which are false (B) and on which the information in the text is not stated (C). Circle the letter of the answer you choose. You’ll hear the recording twice.
Presenter (f)

What annoys you most in everyday life? The magazine Reader’s Digest recently carried out a survey to find out what day-to-day irritations most infuriate people. With me is David Moller, one of the magazine’s editors. David, how did the survey work?
Editor (m)

Well, first we asked the European editors of Reader’s Digest to come up with a list of 20 common annoyances. Then, here in Britain and in 16 other European countries where our magazine is published, we handed the list to 200 people in each country and asked them to rate them on an irritability scale – did they find them extremely irritating, irritating, a little irritating or not irritating at all? And we asked them which one irritated them the most?
Presenter (f)

And what kind of things have emerged from the survey?
Editor (m)

Well, we don’t claim our survey is totally scientific, but our poll of 3,400 Britons and other Europeans aged 18 and over threw up some fascinating findings. It also graphically illustrated national differences – what annoys one country may be of little concern in another.
Presenter (f)

Give me an example.
Editor (m)

Well, for instance, 85 per cent of Britons we polled hate people spitting in public, as do 95 per cent of Hungarians and 85 per cent of Spaniards, whereas only 50 per cent of Norwegians are annoyed by it. Does that mean you can spit freely in Norway? Doubtful. Rather, it may mean that Norwegians encounter it so rarely that it doesn’t bother them, whereas in Britain, Hungary and Spain this unpleasant practice is more common – and annoying.
Presenter (f)

So presumably there were quite a lot of national differences?
Editor (m)

Yes. Interestingly, automated telephone switchboards irritated the British more than any other Europeans – 79 per cent, against Norway, which came second with 61 per cent. When it comes to irritation at people who don’t say please and thank you, the French and the British are united – 80 per cent in each country said it irritated them, the highest level in Europe.
Presenter (f)

And what about age differences? Were the young annoyed by certain things and the older generation by other things?
Editor (m)

Well, across all the countries, we found that only two issues irritate young people, who we defined as anyone between 18 and 35, more than the older generation, who we defined as anyone aged 51 and over. These were internet pop-up ads and roadworks. That’s hardly surprising given that more young people use the internet and they are bound to be impatient behind the wheel. The biggest gaps between the two age groups were over graffiti and swearing. Older people are more irritated by these things than the young.
Presenter (f)

OK, now which countries were the most irritated? Where will we find the most annoyed people? It would be fascinating to …. (fade)
You have 15 seconds to complete the task. (Pause 15 seconds.)

Now you will hear the text again. (Repeat.)

This is the end of the task. You now have 15 seconds to check your answers.

You will hear five short stories or announcements. For items 16-20 circle 1, 2, 3 or 4 according to the answer option you choose. You will hear the recording once only.

The Environment Agency has launched a campaign to get women fishing. It is, according to the agency, a wonderful countryside hobby, but of the four million people who pursue it each year, only 2% are women. The agency is hoping to encourage us to charge into what is one of the country’s last women-free areas. I suspect many women listening to this are thinking that men can keep it to themselves – that there are better ways of spending a weekend than sitting by a river. But four million men and a government agency can’t be wrong, can they? I decided to find out.
17

Ivor Cutler, who died in 2006, was distinct in the world of entertainment for being almost unclassifiable and completely unique. He was a poet, playwright, songwriter, musician, cartoonist, teller of tales and writer of stories for both adults and children. While pursuing his career as a cult figure, Cutler worked as a schoolteacher for 30 years, and did not begin seriously writing or performing until he was in his forties. His considerable popularity derived largely from the contrast between his serious, even solemn way of speaking and the deep eccentricity of his subject matter and attitude to life. It was once said that Ivor Cutler was a man for whom the label ‘eccentric’ was totally inadequate.

Troodos Taverna is well-known for its delicious home-cooked Greek food. Inside the family-run restaurant, Greek music plays quietly in the background and the owner, George wanders around chatting to customers. The atmosphere is very relaxed and it is clear, from the number of lunch-time regulars, that Troodos is something of a local favourite.
19

A series of finds at a previously unknown Roman amphitheatre in Chester in the north of England suggest that the habits of sports fans have not changed in almost two thousand years, say archaeologists. The remains of wooden structures thought to have been stalls were found outside the arena and near them were beef ribs and chicken bones – believed to be the left-overs of Roman Britain’s version of fast food. Parts of mass-produced pottery bowls showing fight scenes found at the site are thought to have been sold as cheap souvenirs.

The Antarctic ice sheet, which holds 70% of the world’s fresh water, is shrinking at a rate of 37 cubic kilometres a year, according to a study carried out by satellites. Previously it was thought that the 2,100metre-thick blanket of ice covering 98% of Antarctica – was gaining more mass than it was losing. This was predicted to happen as precipitation increased in a warming climate. But now sophisticated new measurements made by two satellites have shown that the ice sheet is melting. The volume of ice lost is enough to raise the global sea level by 0.4 millimetres a year. Most of the loss is from the West Antarctic ice sheet, which is eight times smaller than the East Antarctic ice sheet.

Mr. Sellyer Is Selling Books

(After Stephen Leacock)

1. A. When I was leaving the bookshop, I went up to the manager and asked him. ‘Do you like the book yourself?’

‘Dear me!’ said the manager, ‘I’ve no idea of the book, I’ve no time to read every book I’m selling’.

‘And did your wife really like the book?’

‘I’m not married, sir’, answered the manager smiling.
2. B. ‘Have you any good light reading for vacation time?’ asked the next customer.

‘Yes’, said Mr. Sellyer, ‘Golden Dreams’ that is the most humourous book of the season. My wife was reading it aloud only yesterday. She was laughing all the time while she was reading it’.

The lady paid for the book and went out.
3. C. Another lady entered the bookshop. She was in deep mourning and looked like a widow. She asked the manager to show her some new book.

‘Something new in fiction’, repeated the manager. ‘Yes, Madam, here,s a charming thing, ‘Golden Dreams’ – a very sweet story, extremely sweet. The critics say that it’s one of the sweetest things written by this authour’.

‘Is it a good book?’, asked the lady.

‘A charming one’, said the manager. ‘It’s a love story – very simple and sweet and wonderfully charming. My wife was reading it aloud only last night. She was crying all the time while she was reading it’.

The lady bought ‘Golden Dreams’ and left the shop.

4. D. A fashionably dressed woman was standing at the counter and Mr. Sellyer was showing a book to her.

‘You are quite sure it’s the latest?’ the lady was saying to Mr. Sellyer.

‘Oh, yes, Mrs. Rasselyeer’, answered the manager. ‘This is Mr. Slush’s latest book. It’s having a wonderful sale. It’s an extremely powerful thing. One says that it’s perhaps the most powerful book of the season’.

I looked at the title, the name of the book was ‘Golden Dreams”.

5. E. And every customer who entered the shop went away with ‘Golden Dreams’. To one lady the manager sold ‘Golden Dreams’ as the reading for a holiday, to another as a the book to read after the holiday, another bought it to read on a rainy day and the fourth as the right book for a fine day.
6. F. One day I went to the bookshop to look through new books. Mr. Sellyer showed me to the back of the bookshop where I could find some interesting books.

While I was looking through the books, I could watch Mr. Sellyer at work and see some of his methods.
