Text for listening "Crazy Women Shopping":

According to the latest research, shopping may deprive women of common sense. Using magnet-resonant tomography, scientists managed to measure electric activity in the brains of women who were shopping. They measured it exactly in the part responsible for common sense and rational thinking. The results of the research show that ability to think well and make rational decisions before a purchase goes down dramatically but that emotions and pleasure sensations reach the limit. When women are buying really expensive things, the ability to think rationally is non-existent.

At the same time, hunting for discounts decreases stress - people do not need to think, and they feel pleased and comfortable. They leave behind their problems, disconnect from reality, and simply do what they want.

Gold Rush

John Jones arrived in Colorado in the gold rush of 1859. He was young, strong, ambitious and tenacious. He struck it rich, but he played cards and soon he was poor again.

For some time John worked on a farm. Then he hit the road again and went on prospecting for the elusive metal. This time John was out of luck and did not find wealth. Gold proved to be more a chimera for him this time.

John gave up all hope but he continued his desperate quest for riches. John never found gold. But, as luck would have it, he found silver. Soon he got rich again.

John moved into a large house in Denver. Things were looking up.

Disaster struck quite unexpectedly. Fire destroyed the city. John's house went up in flames.

A year later some remaining buildings were swept away by a severe flood.

But John had already left the city. Now he became a sheep rancher. He worked hard and the ranch was not far from Denver. Soon John prospered again.
